Nail the Style You Love: Transitional Design

Whether you’re building a new pool or remodeling an existing pool, there’s a lot to think about when it comes to design. Interpreting design terms can feel like learning a new language, and it can be challenging to know what buzzwords to use when searching for inspiration. We’re launching a new blog series that will walk you through popular design styles. We’ll also give you tips on incorporating elements of each design category into your poolscape.

Transitional design: Classic and contemporary collide.

Ever-evolving, Transitional design combines elements of classic style with current trends. The best aspects of various design styles are carefully tied together to create a streamlined, modern twist on traditional. The result? A poolscape that’s cohesive, versatile and incredibly beautiful.

    How to pull it off

    1. Keep base layers like pavers and the pool finish timeless. A soft and neutral color palette allows you to add texture and pops of color with natural design elements like plants.

    2. Include some warm tones in your color palette to make the space feel comfortable and chic.

    3. Play with patterns and make the design your own with decorative touches like planters, pillows and outdoor furniture that can be easily refreshed and rearranged.

    4. Combine textures. An easy way to do this is with upholstery and pillows. Outdoor elements featuring contrasting fire and water can also achieve a mixed-media look and feel.

    5. Mix and match sleek and rustic materials. For example, pair a modern outdoor table with textured woven chairs.

Designer Files: Interview with Joël-Eric Mignault from Jem Arte & Agua

Joël-Eric Mignault, the founder of Jem Arte & Agua, is the first designer, consultant and aquatic builder from Quebec to graduate as SWD & IWI from the prestigious Genesis III & Watershape Universities. Throughout his 33-year career, he has designed and/or built more than 500 aquatic projects ranging from spas and prestigious residential pools to Nordic spas, hotels, indoor surfing, wave pool and indoor aquatic centers.

We were lucky enough to catch up with Joël to learn about one of his latest design projects which included PebbleSheen Blue Surf and Lightstreams Glass Tile in Steel Blue. Read the full interview and view the project video below.

PTI: Joel, what caused you to choose Lightstreams for your project?

JEM: “Lightstreams Tile is absolutely unique, as simple as that. I wanted a very distinctive, exclusive tile for my design that would fit with my other exclusive products. That’s why we choose Lightstreams Glass Tile.”

PTI: How did you start this project and where was it located?

JEM: “This pool project was a total remodel and redesign, located in Westmount Montreal Quebec. The challenge was that we built it during winter and during Covid!”

PTI: Were you using a PebbleTec finish and if so, what kind did you use?

JEM: “We used a Pebblesheen finish in Blue Surf for this pool. We’ve been using PebbleTec for years because we think that it’s hands-down the best cementitious product on the market.”

  • The PebbleTec Pool Resurfacing Process for Remodels & New Pools

The PebbleTec Pool Resurfacing Process for Remodels & New Pools

Wondering how the PebbleTec application process works? You’ve come to the right place! In this blog post, we are breaking down everything to expect during the PTI® pool resurfacing process.

Step 1: Prep the Pool for Application

For pool remodels, your applicator will strip off the existing surface to create a smooth, blank canvas for the new finish.

    Step 2: Mix it Up

After the pool surface has been prepped, your applicator will mix up your finish.

    Step 3: Spray

In this step, your applicator will use a pneumatic spray applicator or other specialty equipment to shoot the PebbleTec material through a hose and onto the pool surface. This application technique ensures even, consistent coverage. Immediately after application, your authorized applicator will hand towel the material to properly secure the pebble mixture.

    Step 4: Expose the Finish

Next, your PebbleTec applicator will spray the pool with water or wipe it down to remove any excess cement from the surface. This process may vary depending on your finish type (PebbleTec, PebbleSheen, PebbleBrilliance or PebbleFina). For example, glass finishes typically require different exposure methods compared to pebble finishes. Whatever finish you’ve chosen, PebbleTec authorized applicators are trained to apply each finish using the most effective techniques to ensure the best possible result.

    Step 5: Set & Harden

The finish is left to set and harden. The specific details for how long the material needs to sit will depend on the type of finish you’ve selected.

Step 6: Pressure Wash & Detail

A special acid solution is used to create a clean finish free of any excess residue or film left behind by the application process.
Once detailing is finished, the application process is complete and it’s time to fill up the pool. Be sure to properly balance chemicals prior to diving in!
To find an authorized PebbleTec applicator in your area, visit our Find a Builder search tool. Here you will be connected with our expansive directory of certified applicators, all easily searchable by zip code.

  • How to Navigate a Pool Remodel: Need-to-Know Tips from the Pros at Precision Pool Renovations

How to Navigate a Pool Remodel: Need-to-Know Tips from the Pros at Precision Pool Renovations

We talked to Patty Deitsch from Precision Pool Renovations about her favorite pool remodel along with remodeling tips for homeowners. Here’s what we learned:

1.) If you could pick just one, what is your favorite pool remodel?

This project, featuring PebbleSheen Blue Granite, won the Gold Award in the Residential Pool Restoration category at the 2019 PHTA (Pool & Hot Tub Alliance) Georgia Chapter Southeast Design Awards. Along with PebbleSheen, this project includes new tile, coping, a diving board and equipment. Additionally, a tanning ledge, bench seating and a raised stone wall with a sheer descent waterfall and PebbleTec fire bowls were added.

2.) What are some tips you would give to homeowners who are looking to begin a pool remodel project?

    • Look for holes in the plaster or areas where the concrete shell is showing through. Evaluate the amount of staining and if calcium efflorescence is forming on the surface. Feel if the surface has become rough. Look for missing, cracked, or chipped tiles and deteriorated grout. Tap on the tile and coping to listen for a hollow sound which is a clue to determine if these materials need to be replaced. All of these are signs that you are due for a pool remodel.
    • If you’re looking for a beautiful and durable surface finish, go with PebbleTec.
    • When choosing a color, keep in mind that pool water color appears differently depending on the time of day, season of the year, and the amount of sun and shade. Search on Houzz and Pinterest to see photos of pools when deciding on a color.
    • Trust your pool professional to offer suggestions for a finish color and complementary waterline tile that will achieve the look you want. Interior decorators generally do not have experience in this area since you are dealing with how the sample will appear underwater.

3.) Why does Precision Pool Renovations prefer to have Pebble Tec finishes installed on their pool renovations?

    • 95% of our residential customers decide to go with a PebbleTec interior finish. It is the best choice. It looks & feels luxurious, it lasts longer than the other options, and there is a wide variety of beautiful colors to choose from.
    • Potential clients often ask for the PebbleTec brand. There are knock-off aggregate brands out there, but PebbleTec uses the finest aggregates. Also, is only applied by licensed applicators and that makes all the difference! Aggregate finishes need to be applied correctly to avoid being under or over exposed.
    • PebbleTec selects and trains its licensed applicators, so we have confidence that the installation is going to be done correctly and professionally. It is an interesting process to watch and runs like clockwork.

  • Four Must-Read Tips to Ensure you are Getting a REAL PebbleTec Pool Finish

Four Must-Read Tips to Ensure you are Getting a REAL PebbleTec Pool Finish

Our authorized applicators go through extensive education to prove they have what it takes to APPLY PebbleTec. If you need help picking the right finish, your applicator also can help you with that.

    1. Double check your contract:Ensure that the color and finish type noted on your contract is an approved finish listed on our website before installation. You can also view our finishes by downloading a brochure.
    1. Look at the material:During the installation of your pool finish, you can check the bags of material to verify that the Pebble Technology International logo and proper finish name are printed on them.
